That’s not in the Bible

A short article today. Mostly to bring attention to a secular article showcasing a problem that is near to me. Ignorance of the bible. The article can be seen here.

Even the secular world recognizes a vast ignorance in the most important book handed down to us from God. We profess to love it and even attempt to quote it but most of us haven’t even read it.

Read it every day. I do, it isn’t that hard to do. Find a version in a language you can read and do some research to be sure its as accurate a translation as it can be. (It may be more accurate to use translation instead of version as version implies changes in the meaning of the word rather than just a focus on converting the word to a familiar language.)

I like the ISV (International Standard Version).  I find it is easier to read than the famous (KJV) King James Version.  It is hailed as the king james bible for our time.  I know there are those who profess King James only as THE biblical text.  Its fine, but what did christians do before 1611?  The King James version is timeless, however.  In that, I mean that other translations may come and go but the King James has been around now for over 400 years and memorizing verses in it you will share wording with so many others who have read the same text.  Truly, if you want to read the original, you will have to go learn hebrew and greek and aramaic.

The point is, find one and read it every day so when someone comes along trying to tell you something is biblical or not, you will know for yourself.  You can get free copies of a lot of the popular translations with e-sword (see blogroll links).

*Note:  I do not agree with everything in the article.  At one point a religion professor declares that satan was not in the garden of eden and the bible doesn’t say he was.  While true, it does not explicitly state “ha-satan was in the garden” we can infer this from reading the remainder of the text.  The shining one, serpent, ha-nachash, they are all the same being.
